Named for the indigenous Pytako tribe inhabiting the banks of the Xingu River basin, who know the fish as kranponhah; an adjective from the Xikrin language that can be broken down into 'kran' for head, mountain or deeply rounded head and 'ponhah' for hair or hairy, also translated as ‘long haired’; referring to the long filaments formed by the extensions of the dorsal-fin rays in mature males.
